Whether it’s a published article, book, prestigious award or speaking engagement, members of Indiana University Northwest’s faculty and staff continue to share their wealth of expertise. We applaud the most recent top achievers that have made a name for themselves and IU Northwest.
IU to honor Young for distinguished teaching
Christopher Young, associate professor in the departments of history, philosophy, political science and religious studies, will receive the Silvia E. Bowman Distinguished Teaching Award at a celebration at IU in Bloomington on April 13.
Established in 1994, the Sylvia E. Bowman Award honors exemplary faculty members in areas related to American civilization. Young's scholarly work has focused on America during the Revolution, the early Republic, and teaching development.
Young also directs the campus's Center for Innovation and Scholarship in Teaching and Learning, where he works to support faculty in developing good teaching practices through development programs, consultations and mentoring.

Ana Osan, professor of modern languages, was recently inducted as an honorary member of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language (Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española, ANLE) and as a corresponding member of the Spanish Royal Academy (Real Academia Española, RAE). The event took place at the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center, at New York University.

Anja Matwijkiw, professor of professional ethics and human rights, and adjunct professor of women’s and gender studies, recently accepted an invitation to write a memorial piece about M. Cherif Bassiouni, to celebrate his extraordinary contributions to the global justice movement. The piece, titled “In Memoriam, M. Cherif Bassiouni (1937-2017),” will appear in The Global Community Yearbook of International Law and Jurisprudence, published by Oxford University Press. Matwijkiw’s co-author for the piece is her brother, Bronik Matwijkiw, of Southeast Missouri State University.
Matwijkiw, an expert on biomedical ethics and law at the national and international levels, is also now listed by Médecins Sans Frontières, a medical humanitarian organization, created in 1971 in Paris, France.
In “The Practical Guide to Humanitarian Law,” published by Médecins Sans Frontières, Matwijkiw’s work, A Philosophical Perspective on Rights, Accountability, and Post-Conflict Justice: - Setting up the Premises appears as an expert resource in the following areas: “impunity, judicial guarantees, non-applicability of statutory limitations, responsibility, universal jurisdiction, war crimes/crimes against humanity. Médecins Sans Frontières, or “Doctors Without Borders,” is a publication committed to human rights as global imperatives.
