IUPD-NW welcomes three women to force

The Indiana University Police Department - Northwest (IUPD-NW) welcomed three new patrol officers to its force recently. Taking their oath at the official swearing in ceremony are, from left, Officers Nina Evans, Caylin O’Hara and Kaitlyn Grennes.

Chief Wayne James said the department has been actively working towards increasing diversity within the department, and in particular, highly qualified female officers. James was proud to announce that the three patrol officers sworn in at the summer ceremony are fully certified by the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (NILEA) and will be working full-time.

Officer Nina Evans was raised in Gary, where she attended Roosevelt High School and then Purdue University Northwest. In 2005, she graduated from the NILEA and went to work at the Gary Police Department, where she served for eight years. In 2013, she began her career as a university police officer at Purdue Northwest in Hammond.

“I now have the honor of protecting and serving the Indiana University Northwest campus and the surrounding community,” Evans said. “My goal is to continue my education and police career here at IU Northwest. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be back in the City of Gary pursuing my passion.”

Officer Caylin O’Hara is a Northwest Indiana native who graduated from Purdue University Northwest with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and criminal justice. She plans to continue her education at IU Northwest and after a few years into her law enforcement career, she would like to join a K-9 unit.

“I’m very glad to be part of the IU Northwest and Gary communities as well as the IUPD family,” O’Hara said. “Don’t hesitate to stop me on campus and say ‘hi!’”

Officer Kaitlynn Grennes was raised in Hobart where she graduated from high school before enrolling at Purdue University Northwest where she earned a bachelor’s degree in behavioral science with a concentration in psychology. She is now pursuing a master’s degree at IU Northwest. Grennes, who prefers to be called Katie, loves to hike and is a loyal Chicago Bears fan.

Welcome Officers Evans, O’Hara and Grennes! When you see them around campus, be sure and say “hello.”
