Campus and community members may donate blood and obtain lab tests, health screenings and information on healthy living

Thursday Oct 31, 2013

As a leader of health education in Northwest Indiana, the Indiana University Northwest School of Nursing is proud to offer important health screenings to the greater community at a wellness fair from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19 in the Savannah Center lobby.

Available services include lab work, free health screenings and health information. Organized by IU Northwest nursing seniors, the fair is themed “Wellness Fair Fever—Catch It!”

Lab workups include, but are not limited to: a health profile; hemoglobin A1C (diabetes screen), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH); and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screenings. Free health screenings include blood pressure screenings and bone density tests.

Lab work will be conducted between 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Those participating in the health profile must fast for 12 hours and may only drink black coffee or water during the fast.

The health profile lab work is $20 for community members and IU Northwest faculty and staff, and $17 for students with a valid student ID. Prices will vary for additional lab work.

Payment is due the day of the test. Only cash or checks will be accepted. Appointments are not necessary.

In conjunction with the wellness fair, the Student Nurses Association is sponsoring an American Red Cross blood drive from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Moraine Student Center.  All donors will receive a T-shirt.

The Savannah Center is located in the southeast corner of the main campus parking lot at 33rd Avenue and Broadway in Gary
