IU School of Medicine – Northwest plans medical school admissions conference April 13

Event is geared toward new students as well as those applying to med school

Thursday Mar 14, 2013

Current pre-med students looking to apply to medical school, as well as high school students with aspirations of one day becoming a doctor, will benefit from the Medical School Admissions Conference at the Indiana University School of Medicine – Northwest.

The conference will address the questions of both these groups of students and parents beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, in the Dunes Medical / Professional Building. A continental breakfast and lunch will be served.

The conference will end at 2 p.m. for new students interested in learning about the university’s “Freshman to Physician” Experience, in which high school students with aspirations of becoming a doctor can actually earn their MD degree on the same local IU campus.

For pre-med students, the conference will end at 2:30 p.m., and optional case-based learning session with medical students, with students as instructors, will last until 4 p.m.

Attendees will:

- Take a tour of campus and the IUSM-NW facilities;

- Receive inside information about how to increase the chances of being accepted to the IUSM;

- Speak with current students about their experiences in the pre-med and medical programs;

- Learn about the many undergraduate scholarship opportunities at IU Northwest that help to defray the cost of tuition for pre-med students (high school students only).

At the IU Northwest campus, students can complete all four years of their medical school education at the same campus where they receive their undergraduate degree.

“By enabling students to complete all four years of medical school in Northwest Indiana, we expect them to have the kinds of professional experiences and relationships that will lead them to practice here and provide our citizens with skilled and compassionate medical care,” said Patrick Bankston, Ph.D., Associate Dean and Director of IUSM-NW and Dean of the College of Health and Human Services.
