Frequently Asked Questions (Registration)

Registration Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do I need permission from the Math Department to register for a math class?
A. Maybe. If you are trying to register for a math class and you didn’t take the prerequisite math class then you will need permission to register for a math class. If you did take and pass the prerequisite math class at IUN, you will not need permission to register for a math class and you can register for the class yourself on One Start.

Q. The math class that I am trying to register for is the one that I tested into but when I try to register online, I get an error message that says “prerequisite not met”.
A. When registering for a math class, One Start will verify that you are registering for the math class that you placed into on your Math Placement Exam. Students will receive an error message if they try to register for a math class that they did not place into on the exam.

Q. I called the Math Department for permission to register for a math class but the class isn’t showing up on my schedule.
A. Once the Program Coordinator received your information to allow you permission to register for a math class, she took the hold off of your account so that you can register for the math class. The Program Coordinator cannot register you for your math class, only you can access your One Start account and register for the math class.

Q. I called the Math Department and gave them my information for permission to register but when I try to register for the class, I still get an error message.
A. Most likely, you are trying to register for a different class number than what you gave the Math Department. You need to register for the exact section of the math class that you requested when you contacted the Math Department. If you want to change to a different section, you need to call the Math Department and give the new class number for the section that you want to register for.

Q. I used my permission to register and then dropped the class. Then I decided to add the class again but when I went to use my permission, I got an error message.
A. Each permission to register can only be used one time. If you drop the class and want to re-add it, you need to contact the Math Department with the class number and your student ID number again.

Q. I left a message with the Math Department and gave them the information for permission to register but I didn’t get a call back saying it was okay for me to register.
A. Because the Program Coordinator is processing a large number of permissions to register, she will not call you back once your permission has been processed, so you need to register for the math class you requested sometime in the evening. The Program Coordinator will only call you if there was a problem with your permission to register.

Q. I took M100 because that was required for my major. I changed majors and now I need to take M118 but when I try to register it says that I didn’t take the prerequisite class.
A. The M100 class is not a prerequisite for M118 so you need to enroll in the prerequisite class for M118, which is M117 Intermediate Algebra. Visit the Math Department website to see the course sequence for math classes here.

Q. I don’t agree with my results on the Math Placement Exam. Can I retake the test?
A. No, you cannot retake the Math Placement Exam if you do not agree with the results. The Math Placement Exam has been shown to be very accurate in placing students in the correct class for their skill level.
