The Department of Geosciences at Indiana University Northwest would like to highlight some of the local groups and organizations that are working to protect, preserve, and restore the natural environment of northwest Indiana and the region. Save the Dunes (http://www.savedunes.org )

The mission of Save the Dunes, a 501(c)3 charitable organization, is to preserve, protect and restore the Indiana Dunes and all natural resources in Northwest Indiana's Lake Michigan Watershed for an enhanced quality of life.

Shirley Heinze Land Trust (http://www.heinzetrust.org)

Shirley Heinze Land Trust, a501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was established in 1981 as a charitable trust to preserve and protect the unique ecosystems of the Indiana Dunes region. We acquireand preserve natural lands throughout Northwest Indiana. We also offer educational programs to inform the public about our area's rich natural history, and we provide numerous volunteer opportunities.

Northwest Indiana Restoration Monitoring Inventory (http://www.nirmi.org)

NIRMI (Northwest Indiana Restoration Monitoring Inventory) seeks to facilitate and administer the long-term monitoring of ecological restorations in Northwest Indiana and the greater Calumet region.

The Calumet Stewardship Initiative (CSI) envisions a Calumet region marked by vibrant communities and cultures, healthy natural areas and a strong economy. Toward this end, CSI engages residents and its member organizations in partnerships that advance nature education, environmental stewardship scientific discovery, cultural understanding and economic growth.

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore 

The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is to preserve the Indiana Dunes and other areas of scenic, scientific, and historic interest and recreational value...and to provide for educational, inspirational, and recreational use by the public so long as such use is compatible with the preservation of the park's unique flora, fauna, and physiographic conditions and its historic sites and structures.

Openlands Project (http://www.openlands.org/)

Founded in 1963, Openlands is a nonprofit conservation organization that protects, expands, and enhances public open space - both land and water - within the City of Chicago, the greater Chicago metropolitan area, and beyond, into counties across northeastern Illinois and across state lines in southeastern Wisconsin and northwestern Indiana, to provide a healthy natural environment and more livable place for people throughout the region.

We conserve and restore the world's largest freshwater resource using policy, education and local efforts to ensure a healthy Great Lakes for generations of people and wildlife.

Indiana Lake Michigan Coastal Program (http://www.in.gov/dnr/lakemich/)

The purpose of the Indiana Lake Michigan Coastal Program is to enhance the State's role in planning for and managing natural and cultural resources in the coastal region and to support partnerships between federal, state and local agencies and organizations. The Indiana Lake Michigan Coastal Program relies upon existing laws and programs as the basis for achieving its purpose.

The mission of the Calumet Ecological Park Association (CEPA) is to preserve and enhance a variety of natural, cultural, and historical areas in the Calumet region for present and future generations.
