Ergonomics is the science of fitting the workplace condition and job demands to the capabilities of the worker. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD’s), such as carpel tunnel and tendonitis, can result when there is a mismatch between the physical requirements of the job and the physical capacity of the worker. Workers who repeat the same motion throughout the day, do their work in an awkward position, use a great deal of force to perform a job, repeatedly lift heavy objects or face a combination of these risk factors are the most likely to develop MSD’s. Oftentimes, simple, inexpensive changes can be made to a workstation or task procedure to minimize or eliminate such strain, and may eliminate the need for expensive medical treatments and surgery down the road.
