FLAGS Early Alert Initiative
(Fostering Learning, Achievement, and Graduation)

Currently, there are two tools that faculty can use to provide feedback.

The Student Performance Roster (SPR) has been in use since 2011 and allows faculty to identify issues students may be experiencing in a course and to make recommendations about how to improve performance. Advisors and others working in Advising Records can see this feedback on student records there and use filters to reach out to students as needed. Campus administrators can run reports in the Decision Support environment to use to support student success.

For Spring 2018, a new tool is being introduced -- the Student Engagement Roster (SER). The SER allows for a much broader range of feedback to students, including recognition of excellent performance and suggestions about ways to deepen one's educational experience to achieve success. In addition, faculty can send a specific note to a student or groups of students as needed. The new tool also was designed to make providing feedback easier for faculty. By Fall of 2018, we expect the SPR will be retired. SER feedback is also available in Advising Records and through Decision Support environment reporting.

SPR (Student Performance Roster)

In support of campus efforts to increase student retention and 4-year graduation, all faculty teaching undergraduate students are asked to provide feedback early and often on student attendance/performance in their class. Effective Fall 2011, this feedback from the faculty is being accomplished online using the Student Performance Roster as part of the FLAG Early Alert System. Feedback from the faculty using these rosters allows for quick and intentional intervention with those students who may need assistance. Based on faculty roster feedback, reports will be readily available to advisors and other school officials to take action.

The student performance roster will also be the mechanism for reporting attendance for the Registrar/Financial Aid Compliance enrollment audit (during week 2).

Course Syllabus/Canvas Class Announcement

Faculty teaching undergraduate classes are encouraged to provide an explanation on the class syllabus and/or via an Oncourse/Canvas announcement. A sample notice is provided here:

This semester I will be using IU’s FLAG Early Alert System to provide real-time feedback on your performance in this course. Periodically throughout the semester I will be entering data on factors such as your class attendance, participation, and success with coursework, among other things. This information will provide feedback on how you are faring in the course and offer you suggestions on how you might be able to improve your performance.
You will be able to access this information in by typing in Grades in the search box and accessing the appropriate application.
